Engineering Manager Salary in India 2026 (EM to Director)

The IC→EM transition is one of the highest-stakes career moves in tech. It's reversible but painful, and the pay math doesn't always favor the EM path.

Latest updates: May 2026 · Based on data from Instahyre’s internal hiring data across 8,000+ tech roles in 2025–26. We revise salary ranges periodically, typically after yearly appraisals.

Quick answer: Engineering manager salaries in India in 2026 range from ₹40–70 LPA at first-time EM level (5–7 years) to ₹3 Cr+ at Senior Director / VP Engineering. EMs at FAANG India earn ₹1.4–2.4 Cr at the L7 / E7 / SDM-3 level. Compared to the senior IC track, the EM path has a lower ceiling but lower variance — Staff/Principal ICs can reach ₹2.5–4 Cr at FAANG India, but EMs more reliably reach ₹1.5–2 Cr without needing to be a top-decile technical IC. The first-time IC→EM transition typically results in a 10–15% pay cut on switch, recovered within 18–24 months.

If you’re a senior engineer in India considering the move into engineering management — or an existing EM benchmarking yourself — this guide gives you the level-by-level pay reality plus the honest IC vs EM tradeoff most articles avoid. The IC→EM transition is one of the highest-stakes career moves in tech because it’s reversible but painful, and the pay math doesn’t always favor the EM path.

TL;DR — Engineering management compensation by level

LevelTypical TitleYOETotal Compensation
First-time EMEM / Tech Lead Manager5–7 yrs₹40 – 70 LPA
EM at unicorn / GCCEM8–10 yrs₹70 LPA – 1.4 Cr
Senior EM at FAANG IndiaSenior EM / SDM-2 / M210–13 yrs₹1.4 – 2.4 Cr
Director of EngineeringDirector / SDM-3 / M313–16 yrs₹1.8 – 2.8 Cr
Senior Director / VP EngineeringSenior Director / VP16+ yrs₹2.5 – 4 Cr+

Numbers are total compensation including base, target bonus, and 4-year-averaged equity. FAANG India offers sit at the top of each band; Indian unicorns sit in the middle; IT services management roles sit at the bottom (often 30–50% below product company equivalents).

How the EM track is structured in India

EMs in India typically report into a Director of Engineering and have 5–10 engineers in their org (sometimes more at GCCs and IT services). The compensation structure mirrors senior IC roles but with weighted differences:

  1. Base salary — usually 60–70% of total comp (slightly lower proportion than senior IC, more in variable)
  2. Performance bonus — 20–30% of base (higher than IC; tied to team outcomes)
  3. ESOPs / RSUs — heavy at FAANG and Indian unicorns; at senior EM level at FAANG, equity is 50–60% of total comp
  4. Joining bonus — common for EM hires, especially when companies need to match unvested equity at the previous job
  5. Direct equity at startups — Series B+ startups often offer first-time EMs 0.1–0.5% equity along with cash

The single biggest comp difference vs IC at the same level: EM bonuses are larger but more variable. A bad team year can mean a 60% bonus payout instead of 100%.

EM salary by level — detailed breakdown

First-time EM (5–7 years, often called Tech Lead Manager / TLM)

This is the transition point. Most first-time EMs in India come from senior IC backgrounds — they were already informally leading a team of 2–4 before getting the title.

ProfileTypical first-time EM CTC
IT services first-time TM₹25 – 40 LPA
Mid-tier product / startup first-time EM₹40 – 60 LPA
Indian unicorn first-time EM₹45 – 70 LPA
GCC first-time EM₹50 – 75 LPA
FAANG India first-time EM₹65 LPA – 1 Cr

The “first-time EM pay cut” is real and is one of the under-discussed costs of the transition. A 6-year senior IC at FAANG India earning ₹75 LPA who transitions to first-time EM often takes an offer at ₹65 LPA, with the gap closing back over 12–18 months as team outcomes get rewarded. Internal transitions usually have a smaller cut than external switches.

EM at unicorn / GCC (8–10 years)

By this stage, you’re managing 6–10 engineers, often with 1–2 sub-team leads reporting to you.

  • EM at IT services / consulting: ₹35 – 55 LPA
  • EM at Indian unicorn: ₹55 – 90 LPA
  • EM at GCC: ₹70 LPA – 1.2 Cr
  • EM at FAANG India (SDM-1 / M1): ₹95 LPA – 1.6 Cr

Senior EM at FAANG India / GCC (10–13 years)

Senior EMs typically have 10–20 engineers across 2–4 sub-teams, with multiple EMs reporting up via TLMs. The first level where total comp commonly crosses ₹1.5 Cr.

  • Senior EM at IT services: ₹50 – 80 LPA
  • Senior EM at Indian unicorn: ₹80 LPA – 1.4 Cr
  • Senior EM at GCC (Walmart, Goldman Sachs, JPMC): ₹1.1 – 1.7 Cr
  • Senior EM at FAANG India (SDM-2 / M2): ₹1.4 – 2.4 Cr
  • Group EM / Sr. EM with AI/ML scope: add 15–25% to FAANG bands

Director of Engineering (13–16 years)

Directors typically own 25–60 engineers across multiple sub-teams, with several EMs and senior ICs reporting in. Most decisions are people-and-strategy rather than technical execution.

  • Director at Indian unicorn: ₹1.2 – 2 Cr
  • Director at GCC: ₹1.4 – 2.2 Cr
  • Director at FAANG India (SDM-3 / M3 / Director): ₹1.8 – 2.8 Cr
  • AI/ML or Platform Director: ₹2 – 3 Cr at top employers

Senior Director / VP Engineering (16+ years)

The top of the EM ladder in India. Compensation crosses well into the ₹2.5–4 Cr+ band at FAANG India and well-funded unicorns. Most VP Engineering hires are network-driven, not posted publicly.

  • Senior Director at Indian unicorn: ₹1.8 – 2.8 Cr
  • VP Engineering at funded startup / unicorn: ₹2 – 3.2 Cr cash + meaningful equity (often 0.2–1%)
  • Senior Director at FAANG India: ₹2.5 – 4 Cr
  • VP / Distinguished EM at FAANG India: ₹3 – 5 Cr+

IC vs EM at FAANG India — the honest pay math

This is the section most career-decision posts get wrong. Both tracks lead to ₹1 Cr+ at FAANG India, but the shape of the path is different.

LevelIC (Staff / Principal)EM (Sr. EM / Director)
Mid-Senior (~L5)₹95 LPA – 1.6 Cr₹1 – 1.6 Cr
Senior Staff (~L6)₹1.5 – 2.8 Cr₹1.4 – 2.4 Cr
Principal / Director (~L7)₹2.5 – 4 Cr₹1.8 – 2.8 Cr
Distinguished / Sr. Director (~L8)₹4 – 8 Cr+₹2.5 – 4 Cr

What this table actually says:

  • At L5–L6 levels, EM pay roughly equals or slightly trails IC pay
  • At L7+, IC pay scales much higher than EM pay — the highest-paid people in Indian tech are Distinguished ICs at FAANG, not VP Engineering
  • However, getting to L6 IC is much harder than getting to senior EM. The IC ceiling is higher, the variance is higher
  • The EM path has a more reliable median outcome — most successful EMs reach ₹1.5–2 Cr; not every IC who tries to reach Principal does

The honest decision framework: if you’re a top-decile technical IC who enjoys deep code work, stay IC. If you’re a competent IC who genuinely enjoys people management, the EM path reaches ₹1.5–2 Cr more reliably and with lower stress at the median.

What drives EM pay specifically (beyond level)

FactorPay Impact
Team size and complexityAn EM owning 18 engineers across 3 sub-teams earns 15–25% more than one owning 5
Domain criticalityEMs owning payments, ranking/relevance, ML platform, or core infra earn 20–35% more than internal-tools EMs
Reports who include other managers“EM of EMs” (TLMs reporting into you) typically warrants the next level
Direct revenue / cost attributionIf your team’s output is directly attributable to revenue or cost, expect a premium
Hiring market scarcityEMs with proven AI/ML or platform-engineering backgrounds are particularly scarce in 2026

₹2.5 Cr₹13,80,000 – 14,60,000~33%

EM compensation is more bonus-and-equity weighted than IC at the same level, so monthly variability is higher. Plan around base salary for cash-flow stability.

Should you switch from IC to EM? The honest decision framework

Five questions before making this move:

  1. Do you genuinely enjoy people work? Hiring, performance management, 1:1s, conflict resolution. If you’d find these draining, the path is wrong regardless of pay.
  2. Are you in the top quartile of your team’s technical ICs already? If yes, the IC path may pay more long-term. If no, EM is the more reliable path to ₹1.5+ Cr.
  3. Can you let go of writing code? Senior EMs do very little hands-on coding. If your identity is tied to shipping code, this is a hard adjustment.
  4. Do you have a manager who’ll mentor your transition? First 18 months as an EM are the highest-failure period. A good mentor cuts this risk meaningfully.
  5. Are you willing to take a short-term pay cut for the long-term path? The first-time EM pay cut (10–15%) is real and usually closes by month 18.

Roughly 30% of first-time EMs in India return to IC within 2 years. The path is reversible but painful for the team and the engineer.

How to negotiate your EM salary

  1. Get a competing offer. The same lever as IC — typical 25–40% bump.
  2. Negotiate level explicitly. EM levels are squishier than IC levels. “Senior EM” vs “EM” is often more negotiable than the salary number within a level.
  3. Equity refresh on senior offers. Initial RSU/ESOP grants are 4-year vests; annual refresh is negotiable and often left on the table.
  4. Quantify team outcomes from your last role. “Grew the team from 4 to 12, shipped 3 major launches, retained 100% over 18 months” is far stronger than “led an engineering team.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the average engineering manager salary in India in 2026? ₹65 LPA–1.3 Cr averaged across all EM levels. First-time EMs earn ₹40–70 LPA; Senior EMs at FAANG India earn ₹1.4–2.4 Cr; Directors ₹1.8–2.8 Cr.

What is the highest engineering manager salary in India? ₹4–8 Cr at Distinguished EM / VP Engineering levels at FAANG India and well-funded unicorns. Most VP Engineering hires are network-driven.

Does an engineering manager earn more than a senior engineer in India? At equivalent FAANG levels, EM and senior IC pay are roughly equal. At Staff (L6) and above, the IC ceiling is higher — Staff/Principal ICs at FAANG India can reach ₹2.5–4 Cr+, while equivalent-level EMs (Director) typically reach ₹2–3 Cr. EMs reach ₹1.5–2 Cr more reliably; ICs have a higher ceiling but more variance.

Should I switch from IC to EM? Only if you genuinely enjoy people work AND you’re not in the top quartile of your team’s ICs. The first-time EM pay cut is real (10–15% typical), recovered within 18–24 months. ~30% of first-time EMs return to IC within 2 years.

What is the salary of a senior engineering manager at FAANG India? ₹1.4–2.4 Cr at FAANG India (M2 / SDM-2 equivalent). Google, Meta, and Apple sit at the top of this band; Amazon slightly below on RSU portion.

What is the salary of a director of engineering in India? ₹1.4–2.8 Cr depending on company. FAANG India directors earn ₹1.8–2.8 Cr; Indian unicorn directors ₹1.2–2 Cr; GCC directors ₹1.4–2.2 Cr.

How many years of experience to become an engineering manager in India? Most first-time EMs in India are at 5–7 years of experience, having spent 2–3 years as a tech lead first. Earlier transitions happen at fast-growing startups; later ones (8–10 years) are common at IT services and large GCCs.

Which company pays the highest to engineering managers in India? Meta, Google, Apple, and Netflix India lead at senior EM and director levels (₹2.5–4 Cr+ at Director / Senior Director). Among Indian companies, CRED, Razorpay, PhonePe, Stripe India, and Atlassian India lead the senior EM market.

Where to go from here

  1. If you’re a senior IC considering EM: the internal transition (your current company) almost always pays better than the external switch. Internal transitions have smaller pay cuts and faster recovery. Talk to your current manager before exploring outside.
  2. If you’re already an EM and feel underpaid: the IC→EM switch reset your benchmark. Get a competing offer to recalibrate; the market for experienced EMs is genuinely tight in 2026.
  3. If you’re 12+ years and have hit Senior EM: the Director jump usually requires either (a) growing org scope at current company over 18–24 months, or (b) switching companies at a higher level. Both work; the second tends to be faster.
