At Instahyre, we are often asked by recruiters and candidates alike about salary ranges. Figuring that it would be a good idea to answer such questions in detail, we thought of organizing the salary data about the top tech roles in India in a series of internal blogs.
Quick answer: The average software engineer salary in India in 2026 is ₹9–12 LPA. Freshers earn ₹3.5–8 LPA in service companies and ₹15–30 LPA at top product companies. Mid-level engineers (3–5 years) earn ₹12–25 LPA at product companies and ₹25–45 LPA at FAANG. Senior engineers at FAANG India can earn ₹60 LPA to ₹1.5 crore in total compensation including employee stock options etc.
If you’re a software engineer in India trying to figure out whether you’re underpaid, when to switch jobs, or what to ask for in your next offer — this guide will give you the answer. We’ve broken down salaries by experience level, company type, city, programming stack, and college tier, so you can find your exact bracket instead of relying on a single national average.
Another thing we realized while researching salaries was that most “salary articles” lump TCS freshers and Google L5 engineers into the same number. That’s useless. The reality is that two software engineers with identical years of experience in India can have a 10x salary gap — and the difference is almost entirely about which company you work for and what you specialize in.
Let’s dig in. Also, feel free to reach out to us either here in the comments section or via sosh!
TL;DR — The numbers, in one table
| Experience | IT Services (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) | Mid-Tier Product (Indian Unicorns, GCCs) | FAANG / Top Product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresher (0–1 yr) | ₹3.5 – 6 LPA | ₹8 – 15 LPA | ₹15 – 35 LPA |
| Early career (2–4 yr) | ₹5 – 10 LPA | ₹12 – 25 LPA | ₹25 – 50 LPA |
| Mid-level (5–8 yr) | ₹10 – 18 LPA | ₹22 – 40 LPA | ₹45 – 80 LPA |
| Senior (8–12 yr) | ₹18 – 30 LPA | ₹35 – 60 LPA | ₹70 LPA – 1.2 Cr |
| Staff / Principal (12+ yr) | ₹28 – 45 LPA | ₹55 LPA – 1 Cr | ₹1.2 – 2.5 Cr+ |
All figures are total compensation (CTC including base, variable, ESOPs/RSUs vested annually, and joining/retention bonuses). Numbers are based on Indian metro cities (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi NCR, Mumbai). Tier-2 cities run 15–25% lower at every level.
How is software engineer salary structured in India?
Before we get to numbers, you need to understand what “salary” actually means — because Indian offer letters are deliberately confusing.
A typical software engineer compensation package in India has five components:
- Base salary — the fixed monthly pay. This is what your in-hand calculation flows from.
- Variable / performance pay — usually 10–20% of base; paid annually or quarterly, often not fully paid out.
- Joining bonus — one-time payment, usually clawed back if you leave within 12–24 months.
- Retention bonus — paid annually or after a fixed period, again with clawback clauses.
- ESOPs / RSUs — stock options (Indian startups) or restricted stock units (FAANG, listed companies). At senior levels at FAANG, stock can be 50–70% of total compensation.
When recruiters quote your “package” they almost always mean CTC (Cost to Company), which is the headline number including everything above plus employer PF and gratuity. Your in-hand monthly salary will typically be 55–70% of the base, depending on tax regime and deductions.
Rough rule of thumb for mid-level roles in India:
- ₹20 LPA CTC → ~₹1.25 lakh per month in-hand (new tax regime)
- ₹40 LPA CTC → ~₹2.20 lakh per month in-hand
- ₹80 LPA CTC → ~₹4 lakh per month in-hand (excluding RSU vesting)

Fresher software engineer salary in India (0–1 year)
Young Indians are facing a tough time. The fresher market in 2026 is the most bifurcated it has ever been. The salary gap between the bottom 25% and top 25% of campus offers is nearly 8x.
| Company type | Typical fresher CTC | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Tier-3 IT services / contract roles | ₹2.5 – 3.5 LPA | Smaller IT shops, system integrators |
| Tier-1 IT services | ₹3.5 – 6 LPA | TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCLTech |
| Mid-tier product companies | ₹8 – 15 LPA | Razorpay, Zoho, Freshworks, Indian SaaS |
| Top GCCs (Global Capability Centers) | ₹15 – 22 LPA | Walmart Labs, Target, Wells Fargo, JPMC |
| FAANG / top product (campus) | ₹25 – 45 LPA | Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Atlassian |
| FAANG L3 + sign-on + RSU (premium campuses) | ₹40 – 50 LPA | Same as above, IIT/IIIT-H/BITS hires |
Why such a big gap? Service companies bill clients by the hour and pocket the margin, so they cap freshers’ pay tightly. Product companies looking to match FAANG salary in India monetize each engineer at multiples of that, so they can afford 5–10x higher offers — but they also hire at 1/100th the rate.
If you’re a fresher reading this: the single most valuable career decision you’ll make is choosing your first company. The gap compounds. A fresher who joins TCS at ₹4 LPA and an IIIT-H peer who joins Google at ₹45 LPA aren’t 11x apart for one year — they’re 11x apart for the next 5 years, because every offer afterward is benchmarked against your current CTC.

Software engineer salary in India with 2–3 years of experience
This is the inflection point. Most engineers see their first 100%+ hike here, especially if they switch from a service company to a product company. This is why they are “dream companies.”
| Track | 2 years experience | 3 years experience |
|---|---|---|
| Stayed at IT services | ₹4.5 – 7 LPA | ₹6 – 10 LPA |
| Switched service → service | ₹7 – 11 LPA | ₹9 – 14 LPA |
| Switched service → product | ₹14 – 22 LPA | ₹18 – 28 LPA |
| Stayed at product company | ₹14 – 22 LPA | ₹20 – 30 LPA |
| FAANG (any path) | ₹25 – 35 LPA | ₹30 – 50 LPA |
The “service to product switch” is the single biggest salary lever in the Indian tech career. If you can pull it off in your second or third year, you skip 4–5 years of slow service-company growth.
Software engineer salary with 5 years of experience in India
At 5 years, you’re either an SDE-2 / Senior Software Engineer or about to become one. The market expects you to ship features end-to-end, mentor juniors, and own a service or module.
- IT services (Senior Engineer / Tech Lead): ₹12 – 18 LPA
- Indian unicorns (SDE-2 / Senior Engineer): ₹22 – 38 LPA
- GCCs (Senior Engineer): ₹28 – 45 LPA
- FAANG India (L4 / SDE-2): ₹45 – 70 LPA total comp (₹20–25 LPA base + ₹20–35 LPA RSUs + bonus)
If you have 5 years of experience and are still earning under ₹15 LPA, you are significantly underpaid for the 2026 market. The fastest fix is interviewing — a single offer from a product company will reset your benchmark.
Senior software engineer salary in India (8–12 years)
At this level, your title varies wildly across companies — Senior SDE, Tech Lead, Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, Architect — and so does your pay.
- IT services Tech Lead / Architect: ₹18 – 32 LPA
- Product company Senior / Staff Engineer: ₹35 – 60 LPA
- FAANG L5 / Senior Engineer: ₹60 LPA – 1.2 Cr (RSU-heavy)
- Series B/C startup with meaningful equity: ₹40 – 70 LPA + 0.05–0.5% equity
- CTO at funded startup: ₹50 LPA – 1.5 Cr + 1–5% equity
Staff / Principal Engineer salary in India (12+ years)
Staff+ engineering roles in India have exploded in compensation since 2022, partly because GCCs realized they were losing senior IC talent to managers. Data scientists also became en vouge roles, with quite high salaries.
- Staff Engineer at Indian unicorn: ₹55 LPA – 1 Cr
- Principal Engineer at Indian unicorn: ₹80 LPA – 1.5 Cr
- L6 / Staff at Google India: ₹1.5 – 2.5 Cr
- L7 / Senior Staff at Google India: ₹2.5 – 4 Cr
- VP Engineering at funded startup: ₹1 – 2 Cr cash + meaningful equity

Software engineer salary in India by city
| City | Average software engineer salary | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bangalore | ₹13 – 16 LPA | The benchmark. ~38% above national average. Largest concentration of product companies and GCCs. |
| Hyderabad | ₹11 – 14 LPA | Microsoft, Amazon, Google all have major campuses. Best cost-to-salary ratio. |
| Pune | ₹10 – 13 LPA | Strong in fintech, automotive software, GCCs. |
| Gurgaon / Noida (Delhi NCR) | ₹11 – 14 LPA | Strong in fintech, e-commerce, IT services HQs. |
| Mumbai | ₹10 – 13 LPA | Premium for fintech and BFSI engineering. |
| Chennai | ₹8 – 11 LPA | Strong in IT services, automotive, Zoho. |
| Kochi / Thiruvananthapuram | ₹6 – 9 LPA | Lower base, but excellent cost of living. |
| Coimbatore / Indore / Ahmedabad | ₹6 – 9 LPA | Rising Tier-2 markets. |
Bangalore software engineer salary is structurally higher because compensation isn’t just about cost of living — it’s about the type of work available. Bangalore concentrates product engineering, AI/ML, and senior IC roles that simply don’t exist in equal volume elsewhere. DYK: main Instahyre office is also located in Bangalore.
Why Bangalore pays the most
Usually, if you’re optimizing for software engineer salary in India, Bangalore is still the answer in 2026 — but Hyderabad has closed the gap meaningfully. Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Apple, and Salesforce all have larger or comparable engineering teams in Hyderabad than in Bangalore, and the cost of living is 25–30% lower. Migrating candidates prefer it.
A ₹40 LPA Hyderabad offer can have meaningfully higher purchasing power than a ₹45 LPA Bangalore offer once you factor in rent, daycare, and traffic-time-as-money. Think about that.
Salary by skill / specialization
We see how AI and related new-age technologies have changed tech talent hiring. The 2026 market is paying steep premiums for specialization. A generalist with 5 years of experience earns ₹15–25 LPA. A specialist with the same experience in the right area earns 1.5–2x that.
| Specialization | Premium over generalist SWE | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AI / ML Engineering | +50% to +100% | LLM and GenAI roles are the hottest in 2026. ₹40–80 LPA for 4 years experience. |
| MLOps / LLMOps | +60% to +120% | Deploying models in production is a small, deep skill set. |
| System Design / Distributed Systems | +40% | Backend engineers who can design systems handling 10M+ users. |
| Cybersecurity / AppSec | +30% to +50% | Severe shortage at senior levels in India. |
| DevOps / SRE | +20% to +40% | Cloud-native expertise (AWS/GCP/Azure) is consistently in demand. |
| iOS Development | +20% to +35% | Smaller talent pool than Android but paid higher. |
| Frontend / React | -10% to +10% | Largest talent pool, so closer to median. |
| QA / Manual Testing | -25% | Affected by automation. |
SPECIAL UPDATE: AI/ML engineer salary in India 2026
This deserves its own breakdown because it’s the fastest-growing category:
- Fresher AI engineer: ₹6 – 12 LPA (mid-tier), ₹15–22 LPA (top product/GCC)
- 2–3 years AI/ML: ₹18 – 35 LPA
- 5 years AI/ML (GenAI/LLM specialization): ₹35 – 60 LPA
- Staff ML Engineer at FAANG India: ₹1 – 2 Cr
Salary by college tier
Recruiters tell us that the college brand matters a lot for the first offer. After that, it fades fast.
| Background | Typical first product company offer |
|---|---|
| IIT Bombay / Delhi / Madras (CSE) | ₹35 – 55 LPA |
| Other IITs (CSE) | ₹25 – 45 LPA |
| BITS Pilani / IIIT Hyderabad / IIIT Bangalore | ₹22 – 40 LPA |
| Top NITs (CSE) | ₹15 – 30 LPA |
| Tier-2 NITs / DTU / NSUT | ₹12 – 22 LPA |
| Strong state engineering colleges (high CGPA + projects) | ₹6 – 18 LPA |
| Self-taught / bootcamp + strong portfolio | ₹6 – 15 LPA |
By year 4–5 of your career, the college that’s on your resume matters very less than the companies on your resume. Hiring managers look at where you’ve worked and what you’ve shipped, not your B.Tech transcript. That’s not to say that educational pedigree doesn’t matter.
CTC vs in-hand: what you’ll actually take home
A ₹30 LPA CTC sounds great until you realize you’ll see ~₹1.85 lakh/month in your bank account.
Here’s the rough math under the new tax regime (no deductions other than standard):
| CTC | Approx monthly in-hand | Effective tax rate |
|---|---|---|
| ₹6 LPA | ₹46,000 | ~8% |
| ₹12 LPA | ₹85,000 | ~15% |
| ₹20 LPA | ₹1,30,000 | ~22% |
| ₹30 LPA | ₹1,85,000 | ~26% |
| ₹50 LPA | ₹2,90,000 | ~30% |
| ₹80 LPA | ₹4,50,000 | ~33% |
| ₹1 Cr | ₹5,55,000 | ~33% |
Restricted Stock Units [RSU] vesting is taxed as income in the year it vests, not when you sell. This is why FAANG total-compensation numbers feel less impressive in your bank account than the offer letter CTC suggests.
How to negotiate your software engineer salary in India
Three rules, in order of importance:
- Have a competing offer. This is the single biggest lever. A higher offer from one product company will get you a 20–35% bump at another. Evaluate offers in terms of base.
- Negotiate base, not joining bonus. Joining bonuses are clawed back. Base compounds into every future hike, RSU refresh, and exit calculation.
- Ask for the offer in writing before responding. Recruiters routinely quote inflated numbers verbally that shrink in the offer letter. Get the breakup in writing — base, variable, RSU value, vest schedule, joining bonus, retention bonus, all separate.
The most underrated negotiation tactic in India: ask what the upper bound of the band is. Most companies operate on internal salary bands. Recruiters will quote the middle of the band by default. You’re allowed to ask for the top. Then, pitch to make that your starting salary band.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average salary of a software engineer in India in 2026?
The average software engineer salary in India in 2026 is ₹9–12 LPA. This blends freshers earning ₹4 LPA at IT services with senior engineers earning ₹50 LPA+ at product companies. We must warn you that the salary median is heavily skewed by the huge IT services majority.
What is the highest salary of a software engineer in India?
The highest software engineer salaries in India touch ₹2.5–4 crore annually at L7+ levels at Google, Meta, and Apple India, and ₹1.5–3 crore at VP Engineering levels at well-funded unicorns. These are total compensation figures including base, bonus, and RSU vesting.
How much does a fresher software engineer earn in India?
A fresher software engineer in India earns ₹3.5–6 LPA at IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro), ₹8–15 LPA at mid-tier product companies, and ₹15–35 LPA at FAANG and top GCCs. The single biggest factor is which company you join — not your college, degree, or CGPA.
What is the salary of a software engineer per month in India?
The average monthly in-hand salary of a software engineer in India ranges from ₹35,000 for a fresher at an IT services company to ₹2 lakh+ per month for senior engineers at product companies. Mid-level engineers (3–5 years experience) typically take home ₹70,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per month after taxes.
Which company pays the highest salary to software engineers in India?
In 2026, the highest-paying companies for software engineers in India are Google, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Netflix. At senior levels (L5/L6), total compensation can reach ₹1.5–2.5 crore annually, with 50–70% of that coming from RSU vesting. Among Indian companies, Razorpay, Flipkart, PhonePe, and Atlassian India lead at senior levels – but we can’t share exact salaries.
What is the salary of a software engineer with 5 years of experience in India?
A software engineer with 5 years of experience in India earns ₹12–18 LPA at IT services companies, ₹22–38 LPA at Indian product companies, ₹28–45 LPA at GCCs, and ₹45–70 LPA at FAANG India. If you’re at 5 years and earning under ₹15 LPA in 2026, you are below market. Landing an interview elsewhere [and converting it – more on that later] is the fastest way to fix it. Prepare before applying to serve out your notice period in India.
Is a software engineer’s salary higher in India or the US?
Software engineer salaries in the US are 4–6x higher in absolute terms — a senior engineer at FAANG US earns ~₹3.7 Cr vs ₹80 LPA in India. However, after adjusting for cost of living, taxes, and savings rate, FAANG India compensation has a comparable or better savings ratio. Remote international roles in India offer the best of both worlds. Instahyre gives you a shot at such jobs.
Is software engineering a good career in India in 2026?
Yes – unless you are bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and manage to succeed at raising money for a startup focused on your idea. Software engineering is the highest-paying mainstream career in India, with strong demand from product companies, GCCs, and AI-first startups. The career has bifurcated though. Generalist IT services roles are growing slowly, while specialized tech roles (AI/ML, distributed systems, cybersecurity) are seeing 30–50% YoY salary growth.
Where to go from here
If you’ve read this far, you have one of three possible reactions:
- “I’m underpaid.” The fix is interviewing; even one offer resets your benchmark. Update your resume with quantified impact to apply to product companies that need your skills.
- “I’m fairly paid but want more.” The lever is specialization. Pick AI/ML, system design, DevOps – your choice – and upskill over the next months. Compensation follows scarcity.
- “I’m a fresher and want to land in the top bracket.” Optimize for first-job leverage. A 6-month focused effort on cracking the DSA interview with a roadmap + system design interview guide + open-source contribution can put you in the ₹15–25 LPA fresher bracket even without an IIT or tier 1 institution tag on your CV.
Whichever bucket you’re in, the next step is the same: get in front of the right recruiters.
