12 lakh students perform on this stage to enter premier institutes of India. And even before that, they dedicate their 2 to 3 years to prepare for this ultimate performance.
Finally, JEE results day arrives and about 10,000 students make the cut. While all of them are brilliant, the topper of IITJEE – the genius who scored rank 1 shines above everyone else.
Every year this top ranker becomes the shining example for millions of JEE aspirants. From media and coachings to politicians, this superstar will become an idol for millions. But as the time passes, media and people move on to other things. By his graduation, rarely anyone will remember him.
But what do JEE toppers do after graduating? What career path does a JEE rank 1 guy choose? What achievements have these scholars bagged after the school ends?
To answer these questions, we looked into the IIT-JEE toppers who graduated in the last 5 year. The details were hard to find but, regardless, here’s what JEE toppers of 2008-2012 are doing right now.
Shitikanth Kashyap – IIT JEE AIR 1 (2008)
IIT Kanpur, Computer Science (2008-12)
As soon as JEE results came out, Shitikanth was flooded in media limelight. He got countless requests from coaching institute wanting to associate with him somehow so they can also share the glory. What’s more, a string of politicians suddenly wanted to reward him for his amazing feat. Soon, he fled to Mumbai from his hometown Patna to stop this madness.
Shitikanth finished his CS undergrad from IITK and then went on to complete his PhD in quantum computing from University of Waterloo, Canada. Although we don’t know what he’s doing currently, his Facebook profile shows he also did research work at Laboratoire d’Informatique Algorithmique: Fondements et Applications in Paris. Looks like a true scholar for life!
Nitin Jain – IIT JEE AIR 1 (2009)
IIT Delhi, Computer Science (2009-13)
Nitin not only topped JEE in 2009, he was rank 1 in AIEE as well. Then he went on to bag a gold medal at the astronomy and astrophysics international olympiad in 2010. Talk about laurels huh!
During his stay at IITD, he received a death threat after he released a book in which he claimed coaching institutes had misused his name for huge profits. Nitin completed his intern at Zomato in Dublin. Soon, he was picked up by Twitter in campus placements and went to Canada. Currently, he’s living in San Francisco, California but we couldn’t find out where he’s working.
Anumula Jithendar Reddy – IIT JEE AIR 1 (2010)
IIT Bombay, Electrical Engineering (2010-14)
Jithendar is the son of a professor at NIT Warangal. A true academic at heart, he wished to continue research in Physics after IIT, as opposed to taking a fat million dollar paycheck.
And guess what? He did just that. In 2015, he went to Switzerland to pursue his Master’s in Electrical Engineering at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich or ETH Zurich. If you notice the pattern here, a majority of top rankers favour careers in research and academia. I guess there’s a different thrill in understanding the mysterious ‘nature’ through numbers and equations for them.
Prudhvi Tej Immadi – IIT JEE AIR 1 (2011)
IIT Bombay, Electrical Engineering (2011-15)
He’s another one on the list who managed to score single digit ranks in both IITJEE and AIEEE (rank 7). During his prep, he told reporters, he had studied for 12 hours between coachings and home. Naturally, he was expecting a under-20 rank but grabbing the top spot was a surprise for him as well.
A little down the line, he interned with Samsung and received a pre-placement offer in 2014. Rumours have it that his PPO was of Rs. 90 lakh +. He finally joined Samsung after graduation and currently stays and works in Mumbai.
Arpit Agrawal – IIT JEE AIR (2012)
IIT Delhi, Computer Science (2012-16)
On grabbing the top spot in JEE 2012, he cheekily replied to a newspaper that he had watched a movie before the exam day. On a serious note, Arpit didn’t attend a single social gathering during his 2-year long prep for IITJEE.
But he’s not just your typical scholar. Arpit takes a keen interest in writing and regularly blogs at Dil aur Dilli. He completed his internships at Tower Research Capital and Deutsche Bank in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Ultimately, he was picked up by Tower Research Capital, where he now works as a Strategist. Notably, Tower Research is famous for offering high salaries to its employees. It’s also known to have really high standards for recruiting freshers. Currently, Arpit lives in Delhi.
So, now you know where the super brains of the country work and live. Are you one of these folks too?
